Safety first:

Always wear safety goggles and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area. Ferric chloride is corrosive and can stain surfaces and skin.

Mix the solution:

Mix ferric chloride powder with warm water in a non-metallic, plastic, or glass container. Do not use a metal container, as the solution will corrode it.

Etch the PCB:

Submerge the PCB in the solution, with the copper side facing down or up. Gently agitate the solution or the board to ensure even etching. The process can take from 10 to 30 minutes or more, depending on the solution's temperature and concentration.
Neutralize and rinse:
Once etched, rinse the board thoroughly with water to remove all the ferric chloride solution. A baking soda solution can be used to neutralize any remaining acid.
